Each player starts with 16 pieces, which can move and capture the opponent's pieces in different ways. The players, starting with the red side player, take turns moving these pieces one by one to "checkmate" the opponent's general, which occurs when the general has no legal move out of check. The general is in check when it can be captured on the next turn and cannot move into positions that will put it in check. Checking or chasing an unprotected piece such that the moves fall in a repeated cycle is not allowed. The player causing this situation must make a move that breaks the cycle after the third repetition of any cycle of moves. The board itself is composed of 9 vertical lines (files) and 10 horizontal lines (ranks) arranged in a grid. The pieces rest on the intersections of this grid. In the middle of the board, there is a section called the river that divides the two sides.
